Have you ever noticed how the food from different shops tastes weird? Not better or worse, just weird. Then if you go back to your normal shop after a week of slyly buying things somewhere else it's like you've betrayed it. The big windows seem to stare at you with disappointment and regret.
The Tescos near me has decided that it won't be able to expand into any other towns in this area. We're surrounded by Sainsburys and Morrisons. So instead it grew bigger and fatter. Now it has a restaurant, a separate garage and is planning on building a dog pen and play park. It's as much my fault as anyone else's. This isn't about the benefits of using local shops instead of the big shiny temples of commercialism. I like Tescos. It makes me feel safe, probably not a very good thing. And even though I do sometimes go to Waitrose, it isn't the same. I'm glad that Tescos is growing. I'm happy that it is succeeding and I hope that it takes over the world.
